A Fifth School Library Presented to the Thyolo District

FOCHTA would like to offer heartfelt thanks to Mrs.May Tam of Hong Kong whose donation has enabled us to build a library for the Mikalati Primary School. The previous four libraries were for secondary schools. The need for a library at this primary school became apparent after seeing the enthusiasm these students have for the books in the FOCHTA office. For some years past our staff had conducted story reading sessions with these students, and their principal had shown great interest in the prospect for a library.

In the District of Thyolo in Malawi, there is a population of 460,000. Out of that, 210,257 are aged from 1 to 9. But it will be difficult to find one child who owns one book at home.

The opening ceremony was held on July 22. It was officiated by the school principal Miss Mwakhala, the Hon. Mr. Masauko, our local MP, and Mr. Batumeyo, the District Education Officer. Other guests included Mr. Banda of the Parents Teachers Association, village chiefs, Mrs. Mtiya, Fochta’s Grassroots Committee Chairperson and board member of FOCHTA, Mr. Lucius Mathiya,Executive Director of Fochta and its Programme Officer, Miss Felistus Msokera.

Miss Mwakhala remarked in her opening speech that the establishment of this library will benefit the students in her school for many years to come. She expressed gratitude to the donor and FOCHTA. She also thanked the people in the community who had helped during the construction. Mr. Batumeyo said that the government is very impressed by Fochta’s promotion of literacy and education.

After the opening, guests were entertained with songs and dances by the students in the school.
