Stories of success

This is a story about two brothers, Gift and Billy Botosi. Gift and Billy were first supported by Fochta in their education, starting from Form 1 in secondary school. After graduating from High school both brothers went on to complete a three year diploma course in Clinical Medicine.

Gift’s story

After completing his diploma course in Clinical Medicine Gift began working in a hospital as a Clinical Officer. In Malawi, due to the shortage of doctors, the government places a greater emphasis on the importance of the quality of training undertaken by clinical officers. They serve essentially as assistant doctors. After a couple of years of working experience, they may conduct operations like appendicitis, child delivery, even caesareans, without the presence of a doctor.

Following his work in the hospital as a clinical officer, Gift studied medicine at Zambia’s Lusaka University, eventually graduating with an MBBS……Fochta’s first medical doctor graduate!! As Gift himself said: “Fochta has brought me out of the darkness of poverty and ignorance. May God continue to bless it and its friends”.

Billy’s story

Billy is Gift’s younger brother. He too worked and trained in a hospital for a number of years. During that period Billy also ran a clinic, something that is not uncommon in Malawi as the clinical officer hospital pay is extremely low.

Recently Billy’s life has changed as he has been appointed by a UK-based NGO as Malawi’s Country Director.

Both Gift and Billy are now married with children.

Fochta is so pleased to have been able to have provide Gift and Billy with the support they needed for their high school education years, and to make the transition to undertake tertiary training. Not only are they able to contribute so positively to Malawian society, but they serve as such positive role models for other students that Fochta supports. As Billy himself said: “FOCHTA has transformed my life, making me to be a good citizen and trusted in my country. I extended my gratitude to Claude and people who support by sponsoring Fochta”.
