VTC Update September/October 2013

Latest news from the Vocational Training Centre site filed by Jillian Hopkins.

“The first rains have started this week, in time to quench the soil so the locals can prepare their fields for planting to come. Work is progressing steadily at the VTC construction site, despite the deluge! Concrete floor slabs have been poured in panels throughout the main building - four days of heavy labour. While the concrete is ‘curing’ or setting, the masons have shifted their attention to the Building 2 fence. The high brick fence is almost complete, with only the ‘demonstration wall’ still underway – two large panels of brickwork devoted to 10 different decorative brick bonds. Many of the masons on the site were trained ‘on the job’ so building this wall was their first vocational experience! At one point, there all the masons were each trying to ‘have a go’ with the designs! Meanwhile, earth moving continues, with digging of septic tank pits complete, leveling of courtyard underway and the moving of soil for the rammed earth ramp at the front entry ongoing. All workers were delighted last week to receive long awaited boots, gloves and new work suits – making their work (especially the concrete pour) easier and safer.“
