School Bursary Appeal

In Malawi, children are selected by the Education Department and then sent to one of the following three categories of secondary school to start in Form One. This selection is based on students’ primary school Year 8 examination results. Secondary schooling is for four years, and although primary schooling is free, that is not the case with secondary schooling. There are three categories of school:

1.  The top students will be sent to national schools with most of them being run by the Catholic Church. The cost to sponsor a student for a year that includes fees, boarding, meals, uniforms, shoes and basic supplies is AUD$700.00 per year.

2.  Other students who did less well will be sent to community boarding schools. Total cost is AUD$320.00 per year.

3.  The third category is community day secondary schools where the majority of students are sent. Total cost is AUD$90.00 per year.

FOCHTA usually asks sponsors to pay AUD$350 for each student. This is to average out the cost of sending them all to the different schools. Experience shows that although the first two categories offer much better quality of teaching, nevertheless, more than half of our university graduates had studied in a CDSS. Please consider sponsoring a student so that a life might be transformed. You could choose to sponsor whichever category you like. Or it could be a one-off donation, in which case we will put that into our School Bursary Account.

The new school year starts in September and FOCHTA is currently interviewing orphaned applicants.

Should you require a tax-deductible receipt, kindly add on 10% as this is the fee that will be charged by our tax-receipting partner, the Catholic Mission. FOCHTA however is strictly non-denominational.
