Ireen Miteche’s life experiences

When I was in primary 8 at Luchenza Primary School, I was selected to attend Providence Girls Secondary School. This is one of the best schools in the area with correspondingly higher fees. However, my mother was able to afford to send me to Luchenza Community Day Secondary School only.

Fortunately, through my headmistress, I heard about FOCHTA, and so with a FOCHTA bursary I was able to attend Providence from 2007 until 2010.

During secondary school I was involved with FOCHTA’s mentoring program, in which we help and encourage other students.

In 2011 I gained entrance to Chancellor College to study for a Bachelor of Education Languages.

I was supported for my University degree through the great generosity of John Wong and his partner Sylvia in Sydney.

I finished my teaching degree in December 2016, and embarked on three months teaching practice at Luchenza Secondary.

Teaching methods are changing in Malawi – we have been taught to use a learner-centred approach, where students are expected to participate by asking questions and by discussing issues. Memorising content is no longer the aim for our students.

I love this new approach to teaching and learning which encourages students to participate and question.

I am very grateful to Claude Ho and FOCHTA, and to My sponsor John and Sylvia for moulding me into what I am today. Without their support and guidance I would not have been here, and I am ready to continue working with FOCHTA to help other beneficiaries.
