Grandmothers groupsThe Stephen Lewis Foundation of Canada has recognised the importance of grandmothers in HIV/Aids affected communities, where these courageous and resilient women have no time to grieve over their own children. Their priority is the next generation: the infants, toddlers and teenagers left behind. With the encouragement of the Stephen Lewis Foundation, Fochta has initiated grandmothers - "gogos" groups, which gather to share skills, leading to income generation, and to support each other in their struggles. Currently thirty grandmas have each received a goat and are also busy working at crafting pots, sewing dresses, weaving and knitting as well as bee keeping. |
