Building ProjectIn January 2006, Sacha Coles of the landscape architect group Aspect, and Sam Crawford of Sam Crawford Architects, offered their time and energy, on a pro bono basis, to design the Fochta Youth Training Centre. In February 2006, Sam was inspired to make the trip to Malawi to consult Fochta staff, committee members and student beneficiaries, as well as a local builder and engineer. Sam then apporached Architects without Frontiers for assistance, and has since led a team of AWF volunteers, including Ken Warr, Tegan Waldren, and Tom Williams Moore, in the design of the centre. The building will include a much more spacious office, a counselling room, storage rooms for the grain which is given monthly to the most destitute students and a meeting room. Very importantly, these larger premises will also house a workshop for training in vocational skills and the youth and community library. Jamie Shelton, of Northrop Engineers, is designing the structural system - also on a pro bono basis. The designs have now been sent off to Thyolo where Fochta staff, students and local officials will give their input. It is hoped to give out tenders shortly. The total anticipated cost of the project is AU$125,000 (US$95,000). The construction will be staged according to FOCHTA's needs, and as funds become available. |
